Students are contributing to UMass Boston's research enterprise in significant ways. UMass Boston offers opportunities for students to engage in research, whether in the natural sciences, in the social sciences, in the arts, or in the humanities. Students interested in research experiences including research assistantships are encouraged to talk to their professors and academic departments for more information. There are numerous opportunities for students to participate in research at UMass Boston.

Research Funds
Degree seeking students from all undergraduate colleges are eligible to apply for funding to assist them with their research. These funds are sponsored by the Vice Provost for Academic Support Services and the University Honors Program. Students have used these funds to help them with expenses they incur in doing their research or creative projects. Students apply for funding to buy books and supplies, to rent rehearsal space, to pay human subjects, to travel, or to help with copying expenses. Graduate Student Assembly — Programs and Opportunities
The Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) provides programs and services pertaining to its mission of enhancing the academic and professional development of our graduate student community here at UMass Boston. Programs include hosting workshops during the annual Graduate Academic Conference and providing a Distinguished Speaker Series during Spring Semester. The GSA also provides several funding opportunities for graduate students including the Spayne and Bollinger grants to support Master's and Doctoral research, Professional Development Grants to provide opportunities to attend academic conferences. Doctoral Dissertation Grant Program
Sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Strategic Initiatives, doctoral dissertation grants provide support for dissertation research activities of doctoral candidates. Allocations for grants are based on the significance of the research, the merits of the research design, and the reasonableness of the budget request.
Students may request up to $1,500 in grant funds. Eligible budget items include technical assistance and clerical support beyond that normally available through the student’s department and program, communications, supplies, and travel. Stipends (taxable remuneration) and equipment will not be funded by the doctoral dissertation grant program. Click here for more information about this program and for application guidelines.
