The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifies UMass Boston as a Doctoral/Research University. In FY09, UMass Boston was awarded $42,226,973, raising our five-year total awards average to $40.7 million. UMass Boston had a total of 682 active sponsored programs—a new record—expending $46,334,349, a remarkable and well invested 12.48% over FY09.
The yearly award totals include direct expenses and recovery of financial and administrative costs.

The breakdown of data by sponsor type show that just more than half of the total is from federal sponsors. In particular, $7.1 million from the U.S. Department of Education, $5.9 million from the National Science Foundation, and $3.5 million from the National Institutes of Health. Awards from colleges and universities are typically subcontracts and awards, and may also be from federal sources.

When broken down by project type, the FY09 award data reveal that research awards dominate. This finding is a reflection of UMass Boston as a research-intensive university with outstanding doctoral programs in 10 areas and a strong, research-active faculty.
